Downside School Christmas Fair and Tree Donation

Residents from Rowan Park recently enjoyed a heart-warming visit to Downside School, where they attended the school’s Christmas Fair. The afternoon was filled with music and cheer as residents explored the stalls, chatted with familiar pupils and were warmly welcomed by staff and students alike. For many, it was a wonderful opportunity to step out into the local community and feel part of the excitement that comes with the Christmas season.
The visit was especially meaningful because it celebrated the connections that have been growing throughout the year. Every Wednesday, pupils from Downside School visit Rowan Park to spend time with our residents, and these weekly visits have quickly become a cherished part of life in the home. From friendly games of Scrabble to lively quizzes and relaxed conversations, these moments are full of laughter and genuine connection. The pupils bring a wonderful sense of energy and kindness, while residents share stories and plenty of good humour in return.
Intergenerational friendships like these are incredibly valuable. They offer residents the chance to stay socially active, mentally engaged and closely connected to the world around them. At the same time, the pupils gain a deeper understanding of later life and learn the importance of patience and respect.

As a heartfelt gesture of thanks, the residents of Rowan Park have chosen to donate a maple tree to the grounds of Downside School. Alongside the tree, a plaque has been arranged to express gratitude for the warmth and friendship the pupils and staff continue to bring into the home each week. The hope is that the tree will grow and flourish over the years, standing as a living symbol of the bond between our two communities.
Moments like these highlight what makes Rowan Park such a special place to live. We believe that a care home should feel truly connected to its surroundings, offering residents not only excellent care but also opportunities for friendship and purpose. Seeing residents enjoy the Christmas Fair and reflect proudly on the connections they have built with Downside School was a reminder of how powerful these simple moments can be, especially in the festive period.
