Brian’s Journey of Navigating Grief and Finding Companionship at Rowan Park

When Brian joined us at Rowan Park in December 2024, he was facing one of the most difficult times of his life. At 91 years old, Brian had recently lost his beloved wife and was living with a diagnosis of bowel cancer. With no immediate family nearby, he was struggling to manage both the physical and emotional challenges that had followed her passing. The day after his wife’s funeral, Brian moved into Rowan Park to receive nursing care and the emotional support he needed.

Understandably, the beginning period of his journey was incredibly hard. Brian arrived feeling anxious, withdrawn,  malnourished and deeply saddened by his loss. He found it difficult to engage with others or adjust to the unfamiliar setting. Building trust, offering comfort and supporting Brian through his bereavement quickly became the main focus for our compassionate care team.

A Gradual Journey Toward Comfort and Connection

Our team knew that helping Brian feel safe and valued would be the foundation of his recovery. In the early weeks, staff spent dedicated one-to-one time with him each day to offer reassurance and companionship. We also decorated his room with familiar ornaments and pictures of him and his wife to help him feel comfortable and create a familiar space. As our relationships with Brian grew, he slowly began to open up, first through simple conversation about his day, and later sharing memories of his wife, Pat, with a fond smile.

With consistent emotional and nutritional support, Brian’s appetite began to return, and his weight stabilised. His anxiety gradually eased and was replaced by confidence and trust in those around him. Over time, his transformation became clear to everyone. He began engaging more with both residents and staff, sharing stories and even enjoying moments of laughter again. His sister visits us regularly and has also played a key role in his renewed sense of happiness and belonging.

Brian’s sister, Eileen, shared such touching words about his journey:
“Brian has come on leaps and bounds since arriving at this wonderful home since December 2024. He was very low and extremely lonely but was given the support from all of the care team. We as a family have nothing but praise for how he has been treated. It has been good that he has been encouraged to join in with things going on, which he needs as his wife Pat took control. The staff here really care and we are so very grateful.”

Others in our home have also witnessed this remarkable change:
“Brian is a lovely man. It has been a pleasure to see his journey from the man who came to us to the man he is now.” – (Ingrid, Administrator)

“When Brian first came to us, he was understandably very low and kept himself to himself. Seeing him now, smiling, chatting, and enjoying time with others really shows how far he’s come—it’s been incredibly rewarding to be part of his journey.” – (Cristina, Clinical Deputy Manager)

Today, Brian is settled and deeply connected with life at Rowan Park. He has built strong friendships with residents and staff and regularly looks forward to mealtimes and daily activities. He has also started joining us for our regular resident meetings and chatting to others about how we can offer them the best possible services.
